What Is Large-Part CNC Machining?

Large-part CNC machining is the manufacturing of large and heavy components using computer-controlled CNC machines. Unlike conventional CNC machining, which is often used for smaller components, large-part machining is designed to handle components with greater dimensions, weight and machining requirements.

It is commonly used for industries such as quarry, palm oil, cement, oil & gas, automation, industrial equipment and heavy machinery.

What Makes a Part “Large”?

There isn't one universal size that defines a large CNC-machined part. It generally refers to components that exceed the working capacity of standard CNC machines and require larger machining centres, specialised equipment and careful handling.

Depending on the machine and application, large components may involve:

  • Large overall dimensions

  • Large diameters

  • Long shafts or rollers

  • Heavy workpieces

  • Deep or complex machining requirements

  • Tight dimensional requirements

For example, large industrial components such as conveyor rollers, shafts, housings, machine bases and structural components may require large-format CNC machining.

What Types of Machines Are Used?

Different CNC machines are used depending on the shape and requirements of the component.

CNC Milling

CNC milling is used to machine flat surfaces, slots, holes, pockets and complex features on large components.

CNC Turning

CNC turning is suitable for cylindrical components such as shafts, rollers, pins and other round components.

CNC Boring

CNC boring is used to accurately enlarge or finish existing holes, particularly on large components where precision and alignment are important.

Wire Cut EDM

Wire Cut EDM uses a thin electrically charged wire to cut conductive materials with high precision. It is useful for components requiring intricate profiles or detailed features.

Why Is Large-Part CNC Machining Important?

Large industrial equipment often operates under demanding conditions. Components need to be manufactured accurately and consistently to ensure proper fit, alignment and performance.

Large-part CNC machining provides several advantages:

1. Accuracy
Computer-controlled machining helps achieve consistent dimensions and repeatable results.

2. Customisation
Components can be manufactured according to specific drawings, dimensions and application requirements.

3. Complex Machining
Large CNC machines can produce components with multiple features and machining operations.

4. Replacement Parts
Custom machining makes it possible to reproduce or replace components that may no longer be readily available.

5. One-Stop Manufacturing
Large components may require several processes, from machining and welding to finishing, inspection and assembly.

Where Is Large-Part CNC Machining Used?

Large CNC machining plays an important role in many industrial sectors.

Quarry & Mining

Heavy-duty equipment often requires large replacement components such as rollers, shafts, housings and other machine parts.

Palm Oil Mills

Large rotating and structural components may require custom machining, repair or replacement.

Cement

Cement plants operate heavy machinery that requires durable and accurately machined components.

Oil & Gas

Large industrial components may require specialised machining according to specific engineering drawings and requirements.

Automation & Industrial Equipment

Custom machine builders often require large components manufactured to their specific designs.

Large-Part CNC Machining at Wengdin

At Wengdin Engineering, we provide large CNC machining and complete manufacturing solutions for industrial applications.

Our capabilities include:

Engineering Review → Material Selection → CNC Milling → CNC Turning → CNC Boring → Wire Cut EDM → Robotic Welding → Surface Finishing → Inspection → Assembly → Delivery

Instead of coordinating multiple suppliers for different processes, customers can work with one manufacturing partner throughout the project.

One Drawing. One Partner. Complete Manufacturing Solutions.

Whether you need a custom industrial component, replacement part or OEM component, our team can review your drawing and determine the appropriate manufacturing process for your requirements.
